Grand Théâtre Autrement

Autrement

Grand Théâtre Autrement

Together with our teams, we aim for the Grand Théâtre to be an institution open to everyone. With this ambition in mind, the countless initiatives developed over the past seven years by the Cultural Development and Dramaturgy departments — family performances, artistic aperitifs, festive late nights, workshops of all kinds, not to mention the extensive work (largely unseen by the general public) carried out with the Department of Public Instruction, private schools and numerous associations — will continue to flourish.

For the sake of clarity, these joyful events will no longer be grouped under the enigmatic name “La Plage”. They can now be found under the headings “Grand Théâtre Autrement”, “Grand Théâtre Ensemble”, “Grand Théâtre Jeunesse”, as well as on “L’Autre Scène”, dedicated to performances that are as engaging as they are unconventional.

Neverland
Based on Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie

Neverland, is the story of a child who refuses to accept the passing of time; it is the continent of buried fears that keeps us from moving on to the next stage of life. What if we were to accept this process of change? German composer Sarah Nemtsov lends the voice of her music to director Julien Chavaz, now a regular on our Geneva stage, for a pantomime performance in search of the coming times.

Roomful of Teeth

We are hosting the La Bâtie Festival at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices for their closing concert featuring Elevator Songs, the first collaboration between Gabriel Kahane and the vocal ensemble Roomfull of Teeth, founded by the American composer Caroline Shaw, a prominent new figure in contemporary music. Composed for the ensemble’s eight voices, with Kahane joining them on keyboard and guitar, this brand-new album (2026) paints a light-hearted yet profound portrait of the timeless tribulations of the human condition. The programme will feature, among other works, Caroline Shaw’s delightful Partita for 8 Voices, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Avant la nuit / L’Oiseau de feu

Combining the creation of Avant la nuit (“Before Nightfall”)—an unconventional play depicting the intimate, daily ritual of putting children to bed—with a contemporary reinterpretation of Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Édouard Hue presents a show focused on the theme of parenthood. From the confines of the bedroom to the fascinating and unsettling realm of Kashchei, from the family nest to going out into the wide world this double bill with twelve performers plunges us into the heart of the conflict between generations and the encroachment of virtuality and illusion into our lives.

From 3 to 7 November 2026 at the Comédie de Genève

Un procès
Based on An Enemey of the People

Written by Henrik Ibsen in 1882, An Enemy of the People seems to have foreseen the challenges of our contemporary world, with its protagonist gradually ostracised by his community for exposing the pollution of the thermal waters that make it rich. Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy proposes here to extend the original narrative by imagining the protagonist’s trial. She turns the stage into a courtroom and examines our present day: conflicts between ecological awareness and financial and political interests, as well as the unstable balance of our democracies.

Questions to John
(working title)

Simon McBurney of the English theatre company Complicité engages in a dialogue with the novelist, poet and philosopher John Berger, who passed away in 2017. Berger listened, discussed and commented tirelessly on art and artists, animals and the rural world, work and precariousness. Alone on stage, the actor engages in a lively and playful dialogue with Berger beyond the grave, questioning our uncertainties and our capacity for action.

Faust – fait, non dit

Now an old man, Faust dreams only of power and possessions. Goethe, the ‘watchman of modernity’, made him the archetype of the human being consumed with thirst for domination in a society that has lost its moral compass and its connection to beauty. The great Italian director Romeo Castellucci does not merely illustrate Goethe. His iconoclastic and unsettling theatre confronts our innermost mysteries through its striking stage imagery.

Fly Away

The Grand Théâtre hosts MAMCO— also on the move—in its entrance hall, the only part of the Place de Neuve building still open to the public. And this takes the form of a box where Derek Fordjour’s film Fly Away (2020) is screened during ArtGeneve and in the weeks that follow. This thirty-minute film features, as its sole protagonist, an African American jockey who struggles in vain to free himself from white control.
